Beach is located in the coastal plain running between the magnificent
Kyrenia mountain range and the beautiful northern coastline, approx. 15

Kyrenia
[Girne] town has spread well beyond its former medieval limits,
but still remains a fascinating and charming place to explore the
rich history of Cyprus. Its Byzantine castle dating back to the
7th century guards the entrance to a beautiful old harbour, which
is surrounded by Venetian houses, restaurants and tavernas. Numerous
shops, the open markets and small supermarkets cater for all needs,
and payment in sterling is readily accepted.
|
Nicosia
became the capital of the island under the Lusignan reign during
the 13th to 15th centuries. The old city is surrounded by massive
walls built by the Venetians to defend against Turkish invasion
in the 16th century. The old city remains the commercial centre
and contains many wonderful historic monuments and buildings dating
from the Lusignan era, with many fine examples of Gothic and Ottoman
architecture. From Kyrenia 26 km.
|
 |
 |
Famagusta
became a great port during the 12th and 13th centuries being a vital
trading link between the East and Europe. Throughout the Lusignan
and Venetian eras the city became one of the most important and
prosperous in the Mediterranean. It became the centre for several
Christian religious orders and many great houses and palaces were
built by merchants and nobles. In 1570 the massive city walls built
by the Lusignans and improved by the Venetians, held out to the
invading Ottoman Turks for ten months. Today they represent one
of the finest examples of medieval fortification. From Kyrenia 73
km.

Northern
Cyprus offers just two seasons, Winter begins in November and
Summer starts in May. It is truly an island of contrasts. In the north
a stony and rocky coastline is interspersed with quiet intimate beaches,
and to the east there are vast expanses of dunes and sandy beaches. Inland
from the north coast is the fertile coastal plain where olives, carob,
citrus fruit and grapes are grown, rising steeply to the conifer forested
upper slopes and the rugged skyline of the Kyrenia mountains. Whatever
your interest, whatever your pleasure, whatever time of year, you can
enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty that is Northern Cyprus.
|
|
Northern
Cyprus
enjoys over 300 days of sunshine in the year. The hottest months
are July and August when average temperatures reach into mid 30°
C, but in the shoulder months of April to June and September to
November temperatures reach a high 20° C, with very little rainfall.
Clean uncrowded beaches and crystal clear warm waters make Northern
Cyprus a corner of earth touched by heaven. Sailing, windsurfing,
waterskiing, diving and snorkelling can be enjoyed nine to ten months
of the year.
|
With
over 300 restaurants and tavernas visitors are spoilt for choice.
The local Cypriot food is rich and varied being heavily influenced
by Lebanese, Syrian, and above all Turkish culinary art. In addition
to the local food there are very many excellent restaurants specialising
in European and other international cuisine, and eating out is still
relatively inexpensive.

Cyprus
has a history that can be traced back for over 9000 years. Sitting
strategically astride the ancient trading routes between Asia, Egypt
and Europe, it has throughout the centuries marked the frontier
between Christianity and Islam. It has been fought over and colonised
by many great empires, the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Persians, Macedonians
under Alexander the Great, the Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the
Ottoman Turks and the British. The heritage and culture left behind
by these civilisations is to be seen all over the island, but none
more so than in the north where the sites of historical interest
abound.
|
Northern
Cyprus
is a haven of natural beauty. From the unspoilt unpolluted coastline
across the central plain stretching between Famagusta and Nicosia,
into the magnificent Kyrenia mountain range. With the first substantial
rains in November spring awakes to produce a riot of colour with
anemones, cyclamens, narcissus, hyacinths, iris and wild orchids
all coming to flower. These are followed by the blossoming fruit
trees and then the sun loving mimosa, hibiscus, jasmine and roses.
The island boasts some 1800 species of plants and flowers, some
native only to Cyprus, and is home to millions of birds every year.
High in the mountains may be seen eagles, falcons, buzzards and
the rare cypriot mufflon, while some of the northern beaches are
major nest sites for the protected loggerhead and green turtles.

 |
The
contrasting landscape is idyllic for the walker who enjoys the pleasure
and challenges of the countryside. The natural beauty pervades all
the senses, whether it is walking the quiet unspoilt beaches or
searching the clear rock pools, or climbing through the orchards
and olive groves up to remote crusader castles or hidden monasteries
high in the mountains. The views and sights are breathtaking, the
natural fragrances waft in the warm air, while lonely silences and
sounds, sometimes dissonant, sometimes harmonious, will remain unforgettable.
